Careers Day Baking Workshop – A Recipe for Success!

Last week, I had the absolute pleasure of taking part in Careers Day at a special school in the North of England. The school wanted to give pupils a taste of different jobs in a fun and memorable way — and what better way than by letting them step into the shoes of a baker for an hour?

Working with small groups of 5 children at a time (ages 5–8), we ran four hands-on baking sessions throughout the day. Each session was a lively mix of learning, laughter, and, of course, delicious results.

What the children got up to

  • Aprons on, hands washed – the day began with the children suiting up like real bakers.
  • Mixing and kneading – they made their own simple white dough, carefully measuring, mixing, and kneading. For many, this was their first time making bread from scratch!
  • Monkey bread magic – each pupil shaped little dough balls, stuffed with cheese and herbs, then brushed them with egg before baking. The smell alone was enough to draw in curious teachers!
  • Tasting time – while the main batches finished baking later, the children sampled mini taster loaves during the session — a proud and tasty reward for their hard work.

One pupil summed it up perfectly:

“I didn’t know baking was so much fun — I want to do it again at home!”

Why it worked so well

Keeping the groups small meant every child could get properly hands-on, ask questions, and enjoy the rhythm of working like a baker. We had floury aprons, sticky fingers, and big smiles all round — proof that learning about careers doesn’t need to feel like a classroom lecture.

A Year 2 teacher told us:

“The children absolutely loved it. They weren’t just learning about bread — they were learning about teamwork, measuring, following steps, and even patience while things baked. It really brought the idea of a career in food to life.”

The bigger picture

Our goal is always to show that baking is more than just making bread — it’s teamwork, creativity, science, and craft all rolled into one. By the end of the day, pupils weren’t just eating bread; they were proudly saying, “I made this!”

As one staff member put it:

“The smell of freshly baked bread drifting down the corridor was wonderful. You could see the pride on their faces when they held up what they’d made. Careers Day doesn’t get much better than that.”
